At the heart of Nathalie’s work and life is a 165 acre woodland in eastern Belgium owned by her family. This woodland offers a unique opportunity and responsibility to manage the woods for biodiversity, regeneration and as a resource. Their approach is forestry with a light touch. Minimising compaction of the soil by using traditional techniques of extracting felled trees using horses. Increasing the diversity of trees to introduce more climate and disease resistant varieties of oaks, walnuts, chestnuts, lime and pine trees, looking forward to the next 50 years. Trees fallen and felled are converted and air dried to be transformed into furniture and products that sequester the carbon for years to come.
